problem 2.15b, dimension?

In (a), the example is in 2D. In (b), the hint seemingly leads me toward a 2D case also. But the problem statement doesn't seem to specify the dimension.

Personally, I don't think a general formula of m(H) can be derived for arbitrary dimensions. Could anyone who has a better understanding clarify a little bit?
