A question on the definition of "coordinate descent." When we start with the u direction, do we go down the u coordinate only once per iteration or do we go down as many time as we can so long as the error is less at each subiteration. In other words, is step 1 only one substep or a "while" loop that only terminates when the error ceases to be less at which time we then jump to step 2 on the v direction.

I would appreciate clarification. Thanks.

You go only once per iteration.
