Thank you. We do mean in the first occurrence. is the "true" difference between and , and is our "observed" difference.

Yes you are right, the is the true difference, but is unknown then I think it can't say something to us, because we don't have it. We just have which tells something to us about . Maybe using " is ...." instead of "tells us" is better.
